A natural gem between the Parâng Massif and the Căpățânii Mountains

The Oltețului Gorges are one of the most spectacular nature reserves in Gorj County, offering landscapes dominated by sheer cliffs, waterfalls and caverns carved into the mountain tops. Over the millennia, the Olteț River, a trickle of water that gathers cold streams from the slopes, has carved a canyon of rare beauty, separating the spectacular Parâng Massif from the Căpățânii Mountains. The wildness of this place stretches for about two kilometres and is a magnet for nature and hiking enthusiasts.

Karst phenomena and geographical records

The particularity of these gorges lies in the unusual proximity of the rock walls. At water level, the distance between slopes is only three or four metres, which has led geographers to call this the narrowest canyon in Europe.

Beyond the visual spectacle on the surface, the underground waters have generated intense activity, creating numerous endokarst phenomena. The slopes are criss-crossed by numerous caves, ponores and bursts, evidence of the force with which water has moulded the limestone over the ages. For visitors, the roar of the wind through the cliffs and the sound of boulders carried by the rushing waters create a captivating and energising atmosphere.

Nature trails and relaxation

Visitors wishing to explore the area can follow the forest track that starts from Polovragi Monastery. For a more immersive experience, there is a marked trail that descends a few dozen metres right down to the water's edge, allowing tourists to admire the „strait” up close.

In the small narrow meadows by the side of the road, outdoor enthusiasts can find suitable places for recreation. Crucially, to keep the reserve clean, the local authorities rely on the responsibility of holidaymakers to collect rubbish.
